The Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts 40-game schedule for the 2018 season in the North Division of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League is final. Fans can now choose the games they want to see. The schedule can be accessed on link at the Tbolts Radio Network's Schedule link, and on the Tbolts website [www.tbolts.org] by clicking on the Schedule link at the top of the page.
The season begins 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 5, at Montgomery Blair Stadium where the Tbolts take on the Alexandria Aces. These two teams last met in a memorable playoff game last July 24 at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda. The Tbolts trailed 13-2 in the sixth inning but ended up winning 15-14 in ten. It was the team’s first playoff win in eight years and was the highlight of the 2017 season.
The 2018 opener on June 5 is the first of a four-game homestand that features contests against the Loudon Riverdogs, the Baltimore Redbirds, and the Baltimore Dodgers. While the first game is June 5, the team’s official Opening Days will be June 8 and June 9, when ceremonies are planned with local and regional leaders.
June is a busy month at Blair as the Thunderbolts will play 15 of their first 24 games at home. Things slow down a bit in July with breaks during the July 4 holiday, the CRBCL All-Star game on July 11, and the Major League Home Run Derby and All-Star game on July 16-17. The Thunderbolts are home for five of their remaining 16 games in July as the Gaithersburg Giants and the FCA Herndon Braves will visit Blair Stadium.
July also features a Tbolts alumni game at Blair on Saturday, July 7, at 2 pm. The Tbolts alums will play the current squad and that game will precede the regularly scheduled tilt against the Rockville Express at 7 pm.
The Tbolts will play four doubleheaders this season, two at home and two away. The first home doubleheader is a big one, against none other than their Beltway rivals, the Bethesda Big Train. The first game is scheduled for Saturday, June 16, at 4:30 pm. The second twin bill at home is Saturday, June 23, again with the first game slated to start at 4:30 pm. Typically, the first game in a CRCBL doubleheader is nine innings, and the second is seven (unless extra innings are needed).
The two away doubleheaders are in Baltimore—July 1 against the Baltimore Dodgers at Joe Cannon Field, and July 8, against the Baltimore Redbirds, at Carlo Crispino Stadium at Calvert High School. Check back for game times.
The season concludes with a home game against the Gaithersburg Giants on Friday, July 20. The CRCBL playoffs begin on Sunday, July 22 with the Wild Card Game. That one game play-in is followed by the two Best of Three League Division Series which runs from July 23-24, and July 25 if necessary. The League Championship Best of Three Series runs July 26-27, with July 28, if needed.
As usual, all evening home games begin at 7 pm (gates open at 6 pm); Sunday games start at 6 pm (gates open at 5 pm). Adult admission is $6.00, and those under 18 get in for $2.00. Youth baseball and softball players in uniform, and children under the age of five, are admitted free.
See you at the Stadium for Thunderbolts baseball!
