The Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts (4-5) took one of two games against the previously undefeated Bethesda Big Train (9-1) on Saturday at Montgomery Blair Stadium. In the first game, the T-Bolts fell to the Big Train 6-0 and Cheng-You Chen got the loss for Silver Spring. Carlos Lomelli continued his dominant start to the season for Bethesda and earned his second win of the season.
Silver Spring managed to stifle the strong bats of the Big Train to start the first game of the doubleheader, as Chen did not allow a hit until the fourth. In the fifth, 1B Udie Summerall knocked in Bethesda's first run with an RBI single. The Big Train then scored four runs in the seventh inning, capped off by an RBI double from 3B Carson Taylor. Taylor had another RBI double in the ninth, making the score 6-0 Bethesda.
Errors once again plagued the T-Bolts. 3B Jimmy Cain had two, while Chen sailed a throw over first base which lead to Bethesda's first run.
The second game was a very different story. In a shortened seven inning contest, the T-Bolts came out on top 8-4. Yung-Tai Lu took the win for Silver Spring, while Josh Nelson lost the game for Bethesda.
Silver Spring got on the board early in the first inning with an RBI groundout from DH Zach Buck. Bethesda took the lead in the third with three runs of their own. East Carolina product Alec Burleson had an RBI single in the inning to give the Big Train a 3-1 lead. Burleson is off to a blazing hot start, with a batting average of .500 on the season.
After scoring two runs in the fourth, the T-Bolts took the lead back with a huge sixth inning. Silver Spring scored five runs, highlighted by a 2-RBI single from LF Cory Rosier. 2B Hunter Pierre also had two RBIs on the day. With that, the T-Bolts took a commanding 8-3 lead and never looked back.
The T-Bolts will be back in action on Sunday, when they will take on the Baltimore Dodgers at Montgomery Blair Stadium. At 5pm, the teams will resume a suspended game which was tied 5-5 in the eighth inning. At 7pm, the regularly scheduled game will begin. The games will be broadcast live at tboltsradio.com.
