RECAP: Bolts Win Home Opener Behind 21-K Pitching Effort

SILVER SPRING — Before 183 fans at Blair Stadium for the home opener, four Thunderbolt pitchers combined for 21 strikeouts in Tuesday’s victory over the Alexandria Aces, 8-3. Lehigh University’s Yash Rane (1-0) picked up the win, going five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits, walking two and striking out ten. Wyatt Rush (0-1) of East Lansing Community College took the loss for the Aces.

Joining Rane in the strikeout parade for the Bolts were Teddy Blumenauer (Harford CC) who notched six strikeouts in two innings; Jake Pecilunas (Towson), three strikeouts in one inning, and Kieran Garner (Catonsville CC), with two strikeouts in his one inning of pitching.

The Bolts run support was bolstered by seven hits, five of which were for extra bases. Jack Schroeder (VCU), Jimmy Cain (Shippensburg), and Nick Atkinson (Shepherd College) hit doubles while Turner Davis (Savannah State U) hit a monster two-run home run that bounced off the top of the roof of the volunteer fire house beyond the left field fence, about a 410-foot shot.

The game featured three errors by the Aces, one by the Bolts, and one passed ball by each side. The Bolts showed that they will run this season as Corey Rosier (Chipola CC), Cole Freise (Millersville), and Devon Jeffreys (Hofstra), all swiped bases. Of the Bolts’ eight runs, six were earned. The Aces had two earned runs of the three they scored.

But the story was Bolts pitching which shut down the Aces from the fifth inning on and made the Bolts 5-3 lead stand up with two more runs added in the seventh on two doubles surrounding a walk.

The Bolts next game is tonight (Wednesday) against the Loudon Riverdogs who will be playing their first game of the year. The probable pitchers are Tim Newell (Immaculata Universisty) for the Riverdogs and Spencer Haroldson (UNC—Charlotte) for the T-Bolts. Game time at Blair Stadium is 7 pm.

Thursday is an off day for the team and the home stand continues with games Friday against the Baltimore Redbirds and Saturday against the Baltimore Dodgers. The team hits the road for its first away game on Sunday at the Rockville Express before returning home Monday to play the Gaithersburg Giants.
