Giants Use Dominant Pitching to Sweep T-Bolts in Doubleheader

The Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts (9-16) lost both games in a doubleheader with the Gaithersburg Giants (14-12) on Monday at Criswell Automotive Field. In the first game, which was a shortened eight inning affair, the T-Bolts lost 1-0. The only run of the game was scored on a walk-off sacrifice fly to right field by RF Giovanni DiGiacomo.

Pitching was the story of this one, as only six hits were allowed by both teams combined. Alexander Klitsas started for Gaithersburg and was dominant through seven innings of scoreless ball. Klitlas's 1.57 ERA is the fourth best in all of the Cal Ripken League. Despite his excellent day, he did not get the win. Coastal Carolina product Kiernan Higgins finished the shutout, pitching one inning to earn the win.

Meanwhile for the T-Bolts, Spencer Haroldson got his fourth start of the year. He also pitched seven scoreless innings, while giving up just two hit. Cheng-You Chen came into the game in the eighth, put was unable to continue the scoreless affair. He gave up the winning run to the Giants, earning his second loss.

In the second game, which was seven innings, the Giants won 3-1 thanks to more good pitching.  Jaret Bennett pitched five scoreless innings, grabbing the win for Gaithersburg. Shortly after his string performance, Bennet was named the CRL's Pitcher of the Week. Mississippi State pitcher Kale Breaux made his T-Bolts debut on Saturday, working through four innings while only giving two earned runs. Despite his decent numbers, he took the loss for Silver Spring.

The Giants got on the board first in the fourth inning. SS Andres Machado slapped a RBI single to the right side to make it 1-0 Gaithersburg. C Jackson Campbell made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly of his own. The Giants didn't stop there, tacking one more run off a fielder's choice by CF Ryan Brown. The T-Bolts were never able to get the offense going. They managed to squeak in one run in the seventh off of a RBI ground out from CF Cory Rosier.

After a dissapointing day at the plate, the T-Bolts will look to bounce back on Thursday against the FCA Braves at Montgomery Blair Stadium. Listen to the game live at tboltsradio.com
