The Thunderbolts defeated the DC Grays, 7-6, Friday night at Blair to tie them for second place in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League. High Point University’s Brady Pearre hit a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth scored Daulton Martin (Tusculum University) and Ian McMillan (University of Houston) to give the T-Bolts a lead they would not relinquish.
Brendan Collins (2-1), from Radford, who came on in the eighth inning, got the win for the T-Bolts, and Tyler Dyball (1-1) from the University of Hawaii, pitching the ninth, picked up his second save. Magnus Elllerts (Harford CC) took the loss and is now 0-1.
Lefthanders Luke Rettig (Lehigh University, 1-2) for the T-Bolts, and Hayden Wynja (Purdue, 1-2) for the Grays were the starting pitchers. Neither would make it past five innings.
In the top of the second, Bryan Call (Brigham Young) drove in Jordan Wiley Louisiana-Lafayette) for the first run of the ball game. The T-Bolts did not answer till the third inning when DaVonn Griffin (James Madison University) scored from third on a Brady Pearre triple. Rettig left the game after the fourth, allowing one run but issued seven walks. He had two strikeouts and gave up no hits.
Bradyn Kail (California University of Pennsylvania) got the ball in the fifth inning. Joshua Congdon (Wofford College) singled to center field to knock in Noah Searcy (Georgia Southern) and Austin Deming (Brigham Young) to make the score 3-1 Grays. In the bottom of the fifth, DaVonn Griffin scored on a ground out by catcher Luke Trainer (Millersville University) to make the score, 3-2.
DC scored three runs in the sixth inning when Reece Yeargain (Randolph-Macon) scored on a Justin Johnson (Lafayette College) double. A Searcy putout scored Trey Terry (Thomas Nelson CC), and Jordan Wiley doubled bringing in Johnson.
In the bottom part of the inning, with Jarren Norman (Va State) pitching for the Grays, Ryan Roell (Frostburg University) hit a solo home run onto the roof of the local firehouse and then Lyle Miller-Green (George Mason University) scored on a Daulton Martin double.
No further runs crossed the plate for either team till the bottom of the eighth inning when the T-Bolts took the lead off reliever Magnus Ellerts and never looked back. A bases-loaded balk allowed Cade Swisher (Virginia Tech) to cross the plate with no outs. Two strikeouts later, the T-Bolts took the lead on Pearre’s single up the middle.
The Bolts are off tonight but are back in action Sunday at 7 pm against the Bethesda Big Train at Shirley Povich Field. Yash Rane (Lehigh) takes his 1-1 record to Bethesda against St. Mary’s College of California’s Dalton Ponce (4-1). The T-Bolts Radio Network will carry the game beginning at 6:55 pm with Julian Baron and Neal Lavon on the call.
